Clifford Robert Olson of Coquitlam, BC, was charged with first-degree murder in nine deaths, following the payment of 100,000 dollars to his family by the RCMP for information leading to the recovery of the bodies. Federal Solicitor-General Robert Kaplan later defended the action. (Six months later, in January, 1982, Olson was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to 11 counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of three boys and eight girls in the Vancouver area between November 1980 and August 1981.)
