Ben Johnson's doctor, Samie Astaphan said the track star first visited his office in 1984 with coach Charlie Francis. Astaphan said Francis brought up the subject of performance-enhancing drugs and he said Johnson told him then that he'd been taking steroids off-and-on since 1981. Astaphan also suggested that he had a moral duty under his medical oath to make sure athletes were using the drugs safely.
