Police forces from both sides of the border moved onto the Akwasasne reserve that straddles the St. Lawrence River in early May. There had been violence between pro-and-anti gambling Mohawks for weeks, but on the night of April 30 two men were shot to death. Solicitor General Pierre Cadieux said police occupying the reserve would seize any illegal weapons like machine guns or hand grenades that they found.
