On August 27 Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa, in consultation with Prime Minister Mulroney and federal Indian Affairs Minister Tom Siddon, called off formal talks with the Mohawks. He also asked the army to dismantle the barricades at Oka and the Mercier Bridge, where for the previous three nights frustrated South Shore residents had pelted police with rocks and bottles. In Ottawa, Chief of Defense Staff General John de Chastelain said the army was the last resort. (In a surprise move on August 28, masked Mohawk Warriors joined the soldiers and began dismantling the barricades on roads leading to the Mercier Bridge. But behind the scenes negotiations broke down again.)
