A Canadian Forces C130 Hercules transport crashed on its way from Greenland to Alert. Five of the 18 people on board died. Sergeant Paul West of Toronto echoed the comments of other survivors in crediting the plane's captain, John Couch, with heroic efforts, including giving up his parka to an injured man. (Couch died, apparently from hypothermia, just before rescuers got to the crash scene.)
