Joey Smallwood, the man who led Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949, died at the age of 90. Smallwood was the Liberal premier of the province from 1949 until 1972. He'd been in declining health since a stroke in 1984 robbed him of the voice that dominated decades of Newfoundland politics. Smallwood once said in an interview that he never regretted bringing the former British colony into Canada.
