Alberta Premier Don Getty said official bilingualism irritates most Canadians and it was time to scrap it. In a speech to an Edmonton service club, Getty said he supports bilingualism, but said it should be a matter of choice, not a matter of law. Getty said he felt the same way about multiculturalism. He added that those were his personal opinions, not the policy of the Conservative caucus or the provincial government, but he wanted Albertans to consider them.
