Thirteen meningitis deaths were recorded across the country in the span of a month. One of the hardest hit areas was the Quebec-Ottawa valley where six deaths occurred. Dr. Gilles Poupart, (ZHILL' POO'-pahr) of the Community Health department in St-Jerome, refused to call it an epidemic, but said the situation was alarming.
