Canadian Major-General Lewis MacKenzie relinquished command of UN peacekeepers in Sarajevo on August 1st. His Canadian battalion was replaced by troops from France, Egypt and Ukraine. Before leaving the besieged city, General MacKenzie wished the new UN force well. (Eight hundred of the 12-hundred Canadians who had been in Croatia since late April had gone to Sarajevo in early July to open the airport for relief flights. MacKenzie said he left feeling disappointed "the situation is worse than when" the Canadian peacekeepers arrived.)
