Ottawa responded to a bid for loan guarantees from Canadian Airlines International. But it was not the 190 million dollars the airline needed to backstop a plan by employees to buy shares in the company and help seal a deal with American Airlines. Transport Minister Jean Corbeil said the federal government would give Canadian up to 50-million dollars to help it say in business while it sorted out its future.
