One of Canada's oldest and best known merchants, Henry Birks and Son, filed for bankruptcy protection. Birks' spokesman Mark Daly said the company was restructuring and would be closing at least 70 of 150 stores across Canada. (Four months later, the 106-year-old British-style firm with the trademark blue boxes was sold to Italian company Borgosesla, S.p.A. for an estimated 100 million dollars.)
