Catherine Callback, an MP who said she could serve Prince Edward Island better from the premier's chair than from Ottawa, got her wish. It took only one ballot for PEI Liberals to elect her at their leadership convention in Charlottetown. As leader, she automatically became premier, succeeding retiring Joe Ghiz. Callback became the country's second female premier.
