Catherine Callbeck became the first elected female premier in Canada when her Liberals scored a landslide victory in the PEI election on March 29. The Liberals won 31 of the 32 seats. Tory leader Pat Mella took the other, a gain from the Liberals. All 23 NDP candidates went down to defeat. Callbeck said she didn't think too much about being the first elected female premier.
