Federal Fisheries Minister John Crosbie announced a 191-million-dollar fisheries aid package for Atlantic Canada and the Gaspe. The maximum a worker could receive was 406 dollars a week, but to get it people had to enroll in a training or re-training program. And Crosbie said the aid package was only for those fishermen and fish plant workers who depended on the ground fishery. Crosbie estimated about 7,600 people in Atlantic Canada and the Gaspe would qualify.
