Alberta Premier Ralph Klein announced that his government was scrapping the controversial pension plan for members of the legislature. The plan provided former cabinet ministers benefits of up to 83 thousand dollars a year, the richest in Canada. Those elected before 1989 would still get pensions, but they would be about 25 per cent lower than expected. Those elected in 1989 and after would have their contributions refunded and wouldn't receive a pension.
