A trip to the Far East paid off big time for Prime Minister Jean Chretien and nine premiers. Billions in commercial business deals were signed. The biggest was a 3.5-billion dollar contract to sell two Candu nuclear reactors to Beijing. The Prime Minister assured reporters the Chinese would not use the two reactors for anything but peaceful purposes. Chretien said China had agreed to Canada's stringent safeguards -- the toughest it had ever signed.
