The Westray Inquiry was told it took just 20 seconds to demolish the coal mine in Plymouth, Nova Scotia in 1992, killing 26 miners. Explosion expert Reg Brookes testified on Nov. 23 that a methane fire fueled a more explosive coal dust explosion and he believed those working in the area where the methane first ignited had a maximum of maybe 10 seconds to react.
