It was an election year in the United States and Canada came in for some bashing. Senator Jesse Helm's bill beefing up sanctions against Cuba got a lift in February when Cuba shot down two small planes belonging to a US-based Cuban exile group. Helms said Canadians who traded with Cuba should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Fidel Castro.
