Ontario was the scene of anti-government protests through the year. Organized labor was angry with the Mike Harris government, which in its first year of implementing his Common Sense revolution had cut two billion dollars in government spending and killed the pro-labor union laws of the previous NDP government. They said Harris was attacking the most vulnerable in society and threatening to turn their high-paying union jobs into lower-paying public sector employment. Labor's third day of protest occurred in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. On the picket line at Budd Automotive in Kitchener, London brake plant worker Shelley Speiran (SPEER'-an) said her family had felt the pain of the government cuts.
