Police in Abbotsford, BC announced they had suspect in a high-profile murder case. In the months following the murder of 16-year-old Tanya Smith and the beating of her friend, Misty Cockerill a man had called Abbotsford police several times taunting them and threatening to strike again. The arrest came almost seven months after the two teens were attacked in October, 1995. Constable Elly Sawchuck said police received several important tips within days of the release of an updated sketch of the suspect, and a tearful appeal from Smith's mother for information. (Thirty-one-year-old Terry Driver was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.)
