Canada lost a political legend in June. Stanley Knowles died in hospital, nine days short of his 89th birthday. Knowles was first elected an MP in 1942. He ran under the banner of the CCF, the forerunner of the NDP. Although he was defeated in the John Diefenbaker sweep of 1958, he returned to the House in the 1962 election. In all, he was re-elected 12 times as he pursued a single-minded devotion to helping those unable to help themselves. Knowles received a tumultuous welcome when he returned to the Commons in March 1982 six months after suffering a stroke.
