Thick black smoke filled a Toronto subway station one night in early August. Scores of passengers were treated for breathing problems. This man, named Tom, was in a train that was caught in the smoke in the tunnel. (The blaze broke out in a stack of rubber insulating mats slated for disposal. The Toronto Transit Commission admitted later the mats shouldn't have been there.)
