Quebec's prison guards demanded and got better protection after a fellow guard was ambushed in his van by two men. Forty-nine-year-old Pierre Rondeau was the second Quebec prison guard to die in what many believed was a battle between police and biker gangs. Guard Don McGovern said guards expected to face danger in prisons, but not on the outside. (After a one-day walkout, the Quebec government agreed to allow prison guards to wear bulletproof vests and be armed when transporting prisoners.)
