One of the last of the world's Cold War strongmen stepped down in May. Indonesian strongman President Suharto was forced out by a week of deadly rioting over the collapse of his country's economy, brought on by the Asian crisis. Suharto had been in power for 32 years. Prime Minister Chretien said the pressure for political change in Indonesia was undeniable.
