David Walsh, a man whose name would be forever linked with one of the largest mining frauds in history, died in early June. Walsh suffered a brain aneurysm in the Bahamas and died in hospital. He was 52. Walsh founded Bre-X Minerals, which went from being the darling of the markets in 1997 to the dumpster after its gold deposit in Busang turned out to be a fraud. One of David Walsh's closest friends, Ted Carter, editor of a Calgary-based stock market newsletter, said it was tough for Walsh to deal with the scandal around him. (Walsh always maintained that he knew nothing of the fraud that was occurring at the Busang deposit.)
