In a bid to restore Canada's mining image in the wake of the Bre-X fiasco, Bay Street proposed a tough new set of mining standards. Among them -- expanding the role of a "qualified person" to independently oversee exploration, restrictions on news releases, and more stringent demands on labs that test drilling samples. Task force co-chair Morley Carscallen said on June 8 that the new standards couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be more fraud, but they would mean more disclosure for investors.
