After five years of wrangling, Canada reached an agreement in principal with Washington state to conserve threatened Pacific salmon stocks. Washington state agreed to reduce its catch of coho bound for the Thompson River in southern BC by 22 per cent in 1998. In exchange, Canada promised to protect Puget Sound chinook. Federal Fisheries Minister David Anderson said Canada had not capitulated to the Americans.
