A rape victim won a landmark lawsuit against Metro Toronto police in the so-called balcony rapist case. The woman known as Jane Doe alleged police were negligent for not warning women in her downtown neighborhood that a man was preying on women. Lawyer Cynthia Peterson said the judge agreed. A man pleaded guilty to raping Jane Doe and four other women and was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
