On Aug. 27, the benchmark TSE 300 lost six per cent of its value, and the dollar closed at a record low (63.31 cents US). Shortly after the markets closed, Finance Minister Paul Martin went on radio and TV to assure Canadians. He said the economy's fundamentals were strong, and that prudent management, including tax cuts in his next budget, would woo investors back to the currency.
