Air Canada's pilots went on strike on the Labor Day weekend, stranding 60-thousand travelers a day. The pilots wanted a 12-per-cent pay raise over two years. The airline offered nine. Jean-Marc Belanger of the Air Canada Pilots Association said the strike could have been avoided. Nearly two weeks later, the pilots accepted a two-year contract for nine per cent, but with improved pensions and working conditions. The strike cost Air Canada an estimated 150-million dollars.
