South African President Nelson Mandela visited Canada in late September. At a rally at Toronto's SkyDome, he made a plea for Canada's English and French communities to work co-operatively together. The statement was greeted with a loud cheer by 40-thousand children who gathered to hear Mandela. Ironically, Mandela prefaced the remarks by saying he didn't want to interfere in Canada's unity debate.
