Canadian Press reporter Jim Crichton said the pilots could have headed straight for Halifax airport rather than follow a lengthy checklist of time-consuming procedures. Minutes later, the jet plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off Peggy's Cove, killing all 229 people on board.
