On May 12, the RCMP announced it would not go ahead with criminal charges against the principals in the Bre-X mining scandal. Inspector Tom Macauley headed the task force into the affair and said many factors contributed to the decision. Macauley said he found the decision frustrating because of the time and money spent on the probe, which included sending investigators to Indonesia and the Philippines.
