Toronto researchers said a treatment called photodynamic therapy could be a powerful new weapon in the battle against cancer. The light-activated drugs generate chemicals that kill the cancer cells, either directly or by destroying the blood vessels supplying the tumor. Ontario Cancer Institute researcher Dr. Brian Wilson said PDT was an effective addition to more standard cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy. He also said on Nov. 25 that the technique could be used to treat other diseases.
