Prime Minister Jean Chretien was happy when more than 400 amendments proposed by the Bloc Quebecois to his government's referendum legislation were defeated in a marathon 36-hour vote in the House of Commons. Chretien said he was glad to have gone through the process. Two changes introduced by the NDP were approved, giving Canada's aboriginals more say over the next Quebec referendum.
