The Liberal government defeated more than 400 amendments to its referendum legislation that were proposed by the Bloc Quebecois. MPs spent almost 36 hours continually voting down the amendments to Bill C-20, which spells out the rules of the next sovereignty vote. Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe said the Liberals would pay a political price for trying to set the rules of Quebec separation.
