Prime Minister Jean Chretien sided with Israel in its main border dispute with Syria. After visiting a multi-religious school in Nazareth, Chretien said Israel should retain control of the famed Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. Syria wanted access to the lake, and wanted Israel to return land bordering it that was taken during the six-day war of 1967.
