Jean Chretien said Canada had made no deals with Israel to take Palestinian refugees from south Lebanon. Several reports, quoting Israeli government officials, said Chretien agreed to accept 15-thousand refugees when he met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. But Chretien said the reports were false. (Canada chaired the United Nations working committee on refugees, and therefore had to remain neutral on the question of refugees. The Palestinians refused to agree to the dispersion of any refugees from the Middle East as part of their peace negotiations with Israel.)
