The mayor of Walkerton, Ont., confirmed the local utility knew the water was contaminated with deadly E-coli bacteria days before the public alert was issued. Dr. Murray McQuigge, the region's medical health officer, accused the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission of failing to act fast enough. Mayor David Thompson said the utility knew over a week ago there was a problem. Seven people died and about 2,500 became ill.
