Winnipeg police apologized to man who was wrongfully convicted in the 1981 slaying of teenage waitress Barbara Stoppel. Chief Jack Ewatski said new evidence had cleared Thomas Sophonow (SOF'-an-oh) of Vancouver, who spent four years in prison before his conviction was overturned on appeal in 1985.
