Prime Minister Chretien told a rally in Trenton, Ontario that his ethics counsellor had cleared him of any wrongdoing in helping a friend secure a loan from the Business Development Bank of Canada for a hotel in his riding in Quebec. The ethics counsellor said Chretien was only doing his job as an MP when he called the head of the bank about the loan. In a statement to the media, Chretien struggled with his emotions as he called the allegations malicious.
