The federal government agreed to open the door to providing Air Canada with loan guarantees, in addition to the 100 million dollars already given to the carrier. Transport Minister David Collenette said the government would be willing to front a loan to Air Canada. (One of those conditions was the carrier become profitable again. Air Canada lost 160 million dollars in its fiscal third quarter.)
