Quebec Premier Bernard Landry met in April with the province's Inuit to sign a 25-year hydro power treaty. The deal will provide at least 475 million dollars to the aboriginal economy and allow a surge in the province's hydroelectric production. Quebec's Inuit would use the government funds for roads, social services, and to address local concerns. In return, Quebec would receive the go-ahead to explore hydro development on nine rivers. Landry explained how both sides would benefit from the deal.
