Ottawa and the provinces announced an 8.18 billion dollar aid package for farmers to be paid out over six years. Prime Minister Chretien made the announcement June 20th in a cornfield outside of Ottawa. The prime minister also offered a word of encouragement to farmers. (Western premiers complained Ottawa should carry more of the burden to help farmers cope with increased US agriculture subsidies. But Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief said the package must be cost shared.)
