Alberta's premier announced that Alberta would not consider separation over the Kyoto accord. Prime Minister Jean Chretien said he'd ratify the clean air deal within the year -- something Alberta vehemently opposed. The Alberta government has said ratification of Kyoto would lead to extreme hardship for the province which relies heavily on fossil-based fuels to drive its economy. Premier Ralph Klein said there are other options in mind to fight Chretien's plan.
