Lawyers for Maher Arar launched a lawsuit in New York against some top US government officials. The case concerned their role in Arar's deportation from New York to Syria in 2002. Among those named in the suit was John Ashcroft, the US attorney-general. Arar said he hoped the suit would shed light not only on the US involvement in his torture, but also the Canadian government's.
