A tearful Bernard Landry shocked Parti Quebecois supporters by quitting June 4th, after getting the support of only 76 per cent of party delegates in a confidence vote. Landry's longtime friend, caucus member Sylvain Simard, said the sovereignty cause was somewhat damaged by the loss. (Simard said Landry followed in the footsteps of former leaders Lucien Bouchard and Rene Levesque, who quit after getting mixed messages from the party on their leadership.)
