Announcing itself with shrieking winds of 233 kilometers an hour, hurricane Katrina slammed into the US Gulf Coast just outside New Orleans at daybreak September 1st. The storm submerged entire neighborhoods up to their roofs, swamped Mississippi's beachfront casinos and blew out windows in hospitals, hotels and high-rises. Prime Minister Martin offered Canada's help.
