US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Ottawa on October 25th. Rice shrugged off the Canada-US lumber dispute as just one minor irritant between the two countries. After meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew, Rice was jokingly asked if she happened to bring a cheque for three-point-five billion dollars. (Ottawa claims Canada is owed three-and-a-half billion dollars by the US for duties improperly collected against Canadian softwood exports.)
