An emergency evacuation of the James Bay community of Kashechewan (ka-SHEH'-shoo-won) was ordered after more than half the residents became sick from tainted water. Speaking in the House of Commons on October 26th, Prime Minister Paul Martin dismissed allegations his government neglected Kashechewan aboriginals. (Ontario's NDP claimed the province only ordered the evacuation after natives showed pictures of the sick to Toronto media outlets.)
